Background information
I am a music composer based in London. I graduated from Goldsmiths College, London, in 2009 with a Master degree in Acoustic Music Composition. Prior to this, I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at Oxford Brookes. Currently, I am expanding and revising my music portfolio, using a variety of instruments, genres and techniques. I compose pieces, predominantly for piano, orchestra, voice and guitar. I am extremely passionate about music for media, such as film, television and video game and my dream is to become a successful composer for this medium.
I am inspired by soundtracks and scores that correlate with an on-screen image. For my dissertation, I explored ‘The Role of Music in Comic book Film Adaptations’. I was interested in discovering if music helped to inject the original comic book imagery back into the film and whether or not it had a musical genre of its own.
I began composing music on my keyboard when I was very young and I decided to start taking proper piano lessons when I went to Secondary School. This was the best decision of my life. I started to develop an interest in music for film when I was asked by fellow students and teachers to compose music for short 5 minute films, as well as scoring a piece for my own film. These films were short listed and shown at The Watershed cinema in Bristol and, one of which, was nominated for Best Film Award in 2005 called ‘The Briefcase’. My music teacher also encouraged me to enter the Proms Young Composer Competition in 2002 where I was awarded with a runner up prize. So many past experiences encouraged me to take this musical path and to follow my dream of being a composer and I thank every single person who has encouraged me to stick with it.
I have been inspired by so many composers but there are a few, in particular, which I always refer to; the great composers, Johannes Brahms, Edvard Grieg and Frederic Chopin; and the more modern day composers, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, Yann Tiersen and Nobuo Uematsu. I adore how their musical styles are so unique and individual that I can always guess who the composer is. I hope that as I expand my portfolio, listeners will be able to do the same with my music and be able to recognise my styles, separating my pieces from others.
